FEB 9, 1924 - MAR 21, 2015 Shirley Delphine Vaughan, age 91, died peacefully at her home in Modesto, comforted by her family and caregivers on March 21, 2015 from non-treatable Pancreatic cancer. Shirley was born to Charles and Della Rath of Patterson, CA., on February 9, 1924 baptized by the pastor from Grace Lutheran Church in Modesto. She was married to Charles W. Vaughan. FEB 9, 1924 - MAR 21, 2015 Shirley Delphine Vaughan, age 91, died peacefully at her home in Modesto, comforted by her family and caregivers on March 21, 2015 from non-treatable Pancreatic cancer. Shirley was born to Charles and Della Rath of Patterson, CA., on February 9, 1924 baptized by the pastor from Grace Lutheran Church in Modesto. She was married to Charles W. Vaughan. Charles and Shirley married at the Sacramento Court House on August 24, 1943. They were married for 52 years. Charles preceded Shirley in death in 1995. Shirley worked at local Modesto canneries for several years in the late 1940's and early 1950's, while studying to become a teacher. An elementary teacher for 25 years in the Modesto and Empire school districts, Shirley enjoyed teaching and inspiring growth in children. A loving Mother and doting Grandmother and Great Grandmother, she delighted in decorating both her classroom and her home for every change of the season and each Holiday. She loved hosting family and friends for gatherings at her home. A rancher's daughter, she enjoyed the outdoors, as well as picking and canning her own fruits and vegetables. She especially loved baking pies. Shirley was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a member of several social groups there, as well as helping to prepare meals for many events at that church. Shirley enjoyed travels to many of the states over the years, including Alaska and Hawaii. She recently toured Canada and it's Northwest territories. Shirley is survived by 3 daughters; Shirli Ann Azevedo of Modesto, Judi (Richard) Mello of Modesto and Janet Hayes of Las Vegas, NV; 5 grandchildren, Christina Vaughan of Portland, OR., Bryan Mello of Portland, Stefanie (Rudy) Briones of Modesto, Jason Hayes, MSgt USAF of Niceville, FL., Paul Hayes of Las Vegas and one great granddaughter, Adelyn Briones of Modesto, CA. Private family services will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe Ave., Hughson, CA. on Friday March 27, 2015. Lakewood Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.
