Genevieve Bernice Peterschick passed away on November 21, 2016 in Hughson. She was 95 years of age.
Genevieve was born on July 29, 1921 in Amsterdam, CA (near Merced Falls) to Frank C. Avila and Mary (Medeiros) Avila. She attended elementary school in Merced Falls and Snelling and graduated from Merced High School in 1938. She married Louis William Peterschick on November 21, 1938. Genevieve Bernice Peterschick passed away on November 21, 2016 in Hughson. She was 95 years of age.
Genevieve was born on July 29, 1921 in Amsterdam, CA (near Merced Falls) to Frank C. Avila and Mary (Medeiros) Avila. She attended elementary school in Merced Falls and Snelling and graduated from Merced High School in 1938. She married Louis William Peterschick on November 21, 1938. She lived in Merced Falls, Stockton during the war, Hickman and Turlock. In 1959 she moved to Ceres where she resided until 2011 when she moved to Samaritan Village in Hughson.
Genevieve worked for E & J Gallo Winery before going to work at Memorial Hospital, first in Ceres and then in Modesto when the hospital opened there. She worked at Memorial for 30 years in admitting, medical coding and billing. She was a charter member of the Young Ladies Institue (YLI) #193 of the Hughson-Ceres area, a Catholic services organization. Genevieve loved to travel and visited many countries in Europe including the two islands in the Azores where her parents were born. She also traveled all over the United States and to many places in Canada. Genevieve had a very inquisitive mind and loved to experience new things and expand her knowledge. She enjoyed going to museums, art shows, plays and musical productions, and eating foods from all over the world. For many years she was an avid member of MICL (Modesto Institute of Continued Learning). She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper daily, and never missed Jeopardy, Her daughters knew not to call her in the evening until she had had the chance to answer the final Jeopardy question. She especially loved spending time with her daughters and granddaughter, thier families and with her extended family of brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. She also loved visiting with her many friends at Samaritan Village and participating in entertainment activites there.
Genevieve is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Elizabeth Field, brother Francis Avila, son Bill Peterschick and grandson Chris Forbes. She is survived by her children Cathy Avila (Terri), Patricia Jackman (Dennis), and Julie Berg (Rod). She leaves behind 4 grandchildren: Tony Forbes, Matthew Peterschick, Madison Berg and Lila Berg and 7 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Dan Avila (Myrna), sister Vivian Chorley (Paul) and sister-in-law Patricia Avila as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Genevieve's daughters wish to express their utmost appreciation to all of Genevieve's caregivers at Samaritan Village. The compassion and affection in the care of Genevieve will touch their hearts forever. They also wish to thank the wonderful staff of Commuity Hospice.
Visitation will be Thurday, December 1, 2016 from 4pm to 8pm with a rosary at 6pm at Lakewood Funeral Home in Hughson. Funeral services and mass will be held on Friday, December 2, 2016 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hughson at 10am with interment following at Lakwood Memorial Park. A reception following the services will be held at Samaritan Village.
